Shoulder Pain

Shoulder Pain Physical Therapy for Lifters & Athletes in Orlando

Fix the shoulder issue that's limiting your lifts — without taking months off training.

A Message From Dr. Khoa Nguyen, PT, DPT

I’ve dealt with shoulder instability and a labrum tear myself. I know what it’s like to modify every push day, dread overhead work, and get told to “just rest it” by someone who doesn’t train.

Most of the lifters and Hyrox athletes I see aren’t dealing with a mystery injury — they’re dealing with a shoulder that was never built to handle the volume and load they’re putting on it, or an old issue that never actually got resolved, just quieted down

"Why Does My Shoulder Still Hurt After Months of Dealing With It?"

If you’ve had shoulder pain for a while, you’ve probably already tried a few things:

  • Backed off pressing or pulling, hoping it would calm down on its own
  • Foam rolled, stretched, or used a massage gun before and after training
  • Saw a doctor who suggested rest, anti-inflammatories, or “see how it feels in a few weeks”
  • Modified your training around the shoulder instead of through it
  • Went to a PT clinic that had you doing the same generic band exercises as everyone else on the floor

None of that is wrong, exactly — it’s just usually not enough for someone training seriously. Rest calms symptoms down. It doesn’t fix why the shoulder got irritated in the first place. And most general PT programs aren’t built around getting you back to heavy pressing, pulling, or overhead work — they’re built around getting you pain-free doing daily activities, then discharging you.

Common Shoulder Issues We Treat

  • Shoulder impingement and pain with overhead pressing or snatches
  • Rotator cuff strain or tendinopathy
  • Labrum irritation or post-labrum-repair rehab
  • Shoulder instability, subluxations, or a shoulder that “feels loose”
  • AC joint pain from bench press or dips
  • Bicep tendon or anterior shoulder pain from pulling movements
  • Chronic shoulder tightness or stiffness that limits range of motion under load

If your shoulder hurts specifically when you bench, press overhead, or do wall balls/snatches in a Hyrox workout — that’s exactly what we specialize in.

How We Approach It Differently?

  • We figure out the actual mechanism. In your first session we test the movements that are actually giving you trouble — not a generic screen — to find what’s driving the pain: a mobility restriction, a control issue, a loading problem, or something else.
  • We build the plan around your training, not around avoiding it. You shouldn’t have to choose between fixing your shoulder and staying in the gym. Sessions are built to keep you training in some capacity while we address the root cause.
  • We progress you back to full load. The goal isn’t “pain-free doing dishes.” It’s back to full pressing, pulling, and overhead work at the intensity you actually train at.
  • We treat you one-on-one, the whole session. No rotating between three patients at once. It’s you and a Doctor of Physical Therapy for the full visit, in-person at our Hunter’s Creek location or virtually.

Who This Is For?

Lifters, athletes, and active adults in the Orlando area dealing with shoulder pain that’s affecting their training — whether that’s a nagging ache that’s been there for months or a more recent flare-up you want handled before it becomes a bigger problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep lifting while I fix my shoulder pain? In most cases, yes — with the right modifications. Complete rest is rarely the answer for lifters. We build your plan to keep you training around your shoulder while it heals, not sitting on the sideline for months.

Do I need a doctor’s referral to see you? No. Florida allows direct access to physical therapy, so you can book a discovery call and get started without seeing a doctor first.

What’s the difference between shoulder impingement and a labrum tear? Impingement is typically pain from tissue getting compressed during overhead movement, often from a mobility or control issue. A labrum tear involves the cartilage ring that stabilizes the shoulder joint and usually causes more instability or catching. Both can cause similar pain patterns, which is why an accurate assessment matters before you build a training-around-it plan.

How is this different from a regular PT clinic? Sessions are one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy for the full visit — no rotating between multiple patients. The plan is also built around getting you back to your actual training, not just pain-free daily function.

Do you treat shoulder pain from Hyrox training specifically? Yes. Wall balls, sled work, and burpee broad jumps put a lot of repetitive overhead and pressing load on the shoulder, and it’s one of the more common injury areas we see in Hyrox athletes.

Do you offer virtual sessions? Yes, for the right cases virtual sessions work well, especially for follow-up visits and exercise progression once we’ve done an in-person assessment.

Please note that the Free Total Body Diagnostic session is specifically designed for individuals who may be apprehensive or doubtful about the effectiveness of Physical Therapy or are uncertain if it’s suitable for their condition. If this describes you, we encourage you to begin with a Free Total Body Diagnostic session. This way, we can work together to determine the cause of your condition and what treatment options are available without any financial obligation on your part.
